Jason was waiting at the entrance to the Grand Dining Room with a white box in his hands. At his request, his dad had reserved a table for eight. Glenda, Carrie, and Suzanne would be joining them. Also per his instructions, Bill had invited Joe and Michael, as Jason thought that would please Carrie and Suzanne. Jason greeted each one of them with a cheerful Merry Christmas and pointed to where his parents were already seated. He told them he had made place cards for them. Joe was the last to arrive and Jason accompanied him to the table.
Suzanne tensed at seeing Joe. She couldn't hear any of the exchange yesterday at Pearl Harbor, but body language was sufficient to tell her Carrie and Joe had not parted under the best of terms. Her friend didn't need any stress at Christmas dinner. She was pleasantly surprised when Carrie said, "Joe! How nice to see you. Right here." She patted the seat beside her. Suzanne had wrongly assumed that was Jason's place.
Jason opened his box and set a tiny clear glass bottle of black sand, adorned with a miniature red ribbon bow, in front of everyone. He circled back to his own chair and remained standing as he spoke, "Legend has it that if you carry home black sand from Hawaii, the ancient gods require you to return someday and pour it back out on the island. That will bring you good fortune. As a special Christmas gift, I bought a bottle of black sand for each of you to fulfill your part in the legend."
They all clapped in approval of his speech and thanked him for his gift. He blushed with pride and sat down between his mother and Glenda.
Joe said to Carrie, "I see you made it safely back."
"Of course. I watched my time just as you warned."
He raised his hands palms toward her, in a gesture of surrender. "I know. You're perfectly capable." They both laughed a little. "I don't know what I'm doing here, but Bill was insistent that I come. I don't think I can eat much."
"Me neither. Can you believe how much of Mama Momi's cooking we consumed?"
Suzanne was intrigued watching the two of them. What a different interaction from yesterday morning. She was glad to see Carrie is such good spirits, having expected her to be depressed this evening.
Michael said, "A penny for your thoughts, Suzanne."
"What? Oh, I'm sorry. I was thinking about something else."
"Obviously."
"What did you say?" She fought a sudden urge to reach up and touch the small crinkles that formed at the outer corner of his eyes when he smiled.
"I said, a penny for your thoughts."
"Oh, nothing that would interest you." She knew it wouldn't, but didn't want to sound harsh. "Hey, I had a good time today. It was nice they let us open the horses to a canter. I love to ride, but it's frustrating when you can only walk or do short spurts of jerky trotting."
"I had a good time because it was with you.
